Yoga Sessions as an Invitation to Inquiry

Spiritual Enlightenment Yoga

A yoga session can be an opportunity to explore how you experience the body, breath and thought. In Being Yoga, this supports inquiry into your true nature. A peaceful feeling or unusual experience is not a test of spiritual awakening.

Explore Sensation Before Interpretation

In a comfortable seated position, notice where the body meets its support. Let attention rest with sensation for a moment. Notice the difference between the sensation itself and the description you give it: “tight,” “pleasant,” or “my shoulder.” You do not need to remove the description; simply see that it is an interpretation of experience.

Let the Practice Raise a Question

As a thought or feeling appears, ask: what is aware of this? Allow the question to remain open. There is no need to manufacture a special state or find a verbal answer. If inquiry becomes strained, return to ordinary contact with the room and the body.

Bring Attention into the Day

After practice, choose one conversation in which to listen without preparing your reply. Notice how quickly an opinion or self-description can arise. This is a practical place to explore the teaching beyond a yoga session.
